“Sometimes, you have to bring it home.”
Introduction
The point I am aiming at is encapsulated in the
well-travelled aphorism that says:
CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME
Caprecon Foundation has come home, indeed.
When We Came Home
We came home:
- When we established a branch in Warri.
- When we provided a beginner’s skills acquisition training programme in hair and beauty treatment and food making, namely: Hairdressing, Pedicure and Manicure, and Pastries.
This training programme was aimed at, and attended by, final-year students of the College of Commerce, Warri — my alma mater.
Why Skills Matter
Growing up, my grandparents instilled in me the importance of learning a trade alongside academic pursuits.
I wish I had taken them more seriously.
Now, I’m trying to inculcate that same mindset into our young people.
“Our world is fast changing and shifting more towards learning a trade or trades, rather than concentrating entirely on academic learning.”
The advantages are glaring
Giving Back to My Alma Mater
Speaking of my alma mater, together with the Graduands of 1987 (who came years after me), we donated a library to the college.
We do these things because we believe they matter.
It is not ego-driven, but driven by a deep desire to give back.
You Can Too
You could do the same, if and when you can.
Every little act of giving makes a difference.
