CHRIST APOSTOLIC CHURCH SIDO STREET, WARRI
The church remains standing,
Even as time, like flashes of lightning,
Passes by.
The universe in which I was a boy
Was ordered by churches; but not my heart.
My body knelt, prayed with congregations.
But my heart was often elsewhere.
At CAC, it was with Ebun, the pastor’s daughter.
Meanwhile, mother took delight in me as a good church-going son.
My distraction came to a crashing end
When pastor was transferred to Lagos.
Many years after,
As I stand before it, under this bristling sun,
I see that the church is still breathing.
I see myself in it.
My soul is at peace with it.
I say to myself: life is a long process.
I comfort myself, saying: there is still time.
My boyhood pasts remain in my memory.
Ebun,
Under the pews
As darkness fell
Just you and I,
I remember…..I remember…
